BRADLEY
BOLZON, Ph.D., Versant Ventures
Acting Chairman
Brad Bolzon brings more than 13 years
of global pharmaceutical industry experience to Versant’s
biotech investment team. He specializes in early-stage biotech
investing with a particular emphasis on new company start-ups.
Prior to joining Versant, Brad served as Executive Vice
President, Global Head of Business Development, Licensing & Alliances
with Roche. Under his leadership, Roche’s Pharmaceuticals
Division established alliances with over 75 biotech companies
worldwide and significantly strengthened the company’s
product pipeline. Previously, Brad held executive roles
at Eli Lilly in drug discovery, business development, clinical
research and regulatory affairs.
Brad currently serves as a board member for Amira Pharmaceuticals,
Antipodean Pharmaceuticals, Sentient Pharmaceuticals, Metabolex,
Speedel and is Chairman of the Board of Synosia Therapeutics.
He is also Chairman of EuroVentures, a wholly-owned start-up
incubator of Versant Ventures.
Brad received a Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in pharmacology from
the University of Toronto and conducted his post-doctoral research
training at the Ottawa Heart Institute in Ottawa, Canada.

ROBERT
BALTERA, JR., M.B.A.
Amira Pharmaceuticals
Robert Baltera is a seasoned pharmaceutical industry executive,
who acquired a wealth of business and product management experience
during 17 years with biotech pioneer Amgen. Before becoming Amira’s
CEO, Bob held a number of senior management positions at Amgen,
the last being vice president of corporate and contract manufacturing.
A scientist by training, Bob joined
Amgen at the beginning of his career as a research associate but
quickly moved to the operations side of the business, working in
finance, product development and commercial operations. He
successfully used his collective experience to serve as team leader
responsible for the approval of Kineret™ in rheumatoid arthritis,
a highlight of his many accomplishments while at Amgen.
Bob has a master’s of business administration from the Anderson
School at UCLA and earned his bachelor’s degree in microbiology
and a master’s degree in genetics from The Pennsylvania State
University.

DENNIS M. FENTON, Ph.D.
Independent Member
Dennis Fenton has over 30 years of pharmaceutical and biotechnology experience, including over 25 years at Amgen. During his tenure at Amgen, Dennis held numerous positions at Amgen including executive roles in process development, manufacturing, sales and marketing, and research and development. Most recently, Dennis was Executive Vice President responsible for worldwide operations, manufacturing, process development and quality. Under Dennis’ leadership, Amgen established manufacturing operations in California, Colorado, Puerto Rico and Rhode Island. Dennis also serves on the board of trustees of Rutgers University and the Keck Graduate Institute. He has a Ph.D. in Microbiology from Rutgers University.

STEPHEN W. KALDOR, Ph.D.
Independent Member
Steve Kaldor, Ph.D. is currently President and Chief Executive Officer of Ambrx, a San Diego-based biopharmaceutical company with a mission to deliver breakthrough protein therapeutics. Prior to this role, Dr. Kaldor served as President and CSO of Takeda San Diego Inc., the US Discovery Research Center for Takeda Pharmaceuticals. He instigated and led the March 2005 $270MM acquisition of Syrrx Inc. by Takeda that resulted in the creation of Takeda San Diego. Dr. Kaldor ran Syrrx, a privately held, structure-based drug discovery company, as its President and CSO from 2003 to 2005. Prior to joining Syrrx, Dr. Kaldor gained over 12 years of drug discovery and development experience at Eli Lilly and Company, as both a researcher and Director with line management responsibility for groups of up to 270 people. He received his formal education in organic chemistry at Harvard University, (Ph.D., 1989) and Columbia University, (B.S., 1984). Dr. Kaldor is the co-inventor of multiple compounds that have advanced into the clinic including Viracept®, a marketed HIV protease inhibitor.

KEVIN
KINSELLA, B.S., M.A.
Avalon Ventures
Kevin Kinsella founded Avalon Ventures in 1983 and has since helped
to form, finance and develop more than 60 early-stage companies,
including: Athena Neurosciences (acquired by ELAN (ELN)); Onyx
Pharmaceuticals (ONXX); Sequana Therapeutics (SQNA) [merged with
Arris to form AXYS Pharmaceuticals (AXPH) acquired by Celera Genomics
(CRA)]; Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX); Synaptics, Inc. (SYNA);
Vocera Communications; and Sytera Inc. (acquired by Sirion).
Kevin was the founding chairman
of Athena, Aurora, Landmark, NeoRx, Onyx, Synaptics, Vertex, X-Ceptor
and Sequana. He was chairman of the investment committee
of Poland Partners and INNOVA 98, respectively a $62.5 million
and a $125 million fund investing in Central Europe.
Kevin currently serves as a director
on the Boards of Ambit, Amira Pharmaceuticals, Anaptys, InCode
and Sirion and is a Board observer at BioVex and Acceleron.
Prior to founding Avalon,
Kevin worked for Solar Turbines International (Caterpillar Tractor)
where he was in charge of all international joint-ventures, barter
and counter-trade; served as an advisor to the Peruvian government
in National Nutrition Planning; taught algebra at the American
High School in Beirut, Lebanon, and served as guest op-ed columnist
for the Boston Herald American.
He is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with
a B.S. degree in management and holds a M.A. degree in international
relations from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International
Studies.
Outside Avalon, Kevin is a member of the Circumnavigators Club,
an elite group of explorers; Vice President of the Board of Trustees
of the San Diego Museum of Art; producer of the Tony Award winning
hit Broadway musical, Jersey Boys; a member of the Council
on Foreign Relations and a member of the League of American Theaters
and Producers. He is the holder of two U.S. patents on anti-diabetic
compounds.

HEATH
LUKATCH, Ph.D.
Novo A/S
Heath has extensive experience investing
in healthcare. He opened Novo Ventures’ San Francisco office
in 2006, was a founding partner of SightLine Partners, and Managing
Director and Head of Biotechnology Venture Investments at Piper
Jaffray Ventures. Heath has invested in multiple biotechnology
and medical device companies and currently serves as a director
at Synosia, Inogen and NeuroTherapeutics.
Prior to his involvement in venture capital, Heath worked as
a strategy consultant with McKinsey & Company, serving
a range of large and small healthcare clients. Previously,
he was founder and CEO of AutoMate Scientific, a San Francisco-based
company specializing in biotechnology instrumentation. He
has also worked as a bench scientist at Chiron, Cetus and Roche
Bioscience in molecular biology, protein chemistry and electrophysiology.
Heath earned his Ph.D. in neuroscience
from Stanford University and his undergraduate degree with high
honors in biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley.

PEPPI
PRASIT, Ph.D.
Amira Pharmaceuticals
Peppi Prasit has more than 20
years of experience in pharmaceutical research and management,
most recently serving in various positions with Merck. These roles
included head of chemistry at the company’s San Diego facility.
While at Merck, Peppi was the lead scientist responsible for Vioxx® and
Arcoxia® and was involved in the optimization program that
led to Singulair®.
During his career, Peppi has
led and/or contributed to research resulting in more than 65 published
papers exploring various elements of drug discovery. Among other
numerous research achievements, Peppi was part of a group that
discovered potent, orally active CysLT1 antagonists, Cathepsin
K inhibitors and FLAP inhibitor that went to clinic. He holds more
than 30 granted patents.
Peppi received his Ph.D. in organic
chemistry from Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand
and served as a post-doctoral fellow in organic and organometallic
chemistry at Princeton University in New Jersey.

JAMES
TANANBAUM, M.D., M.B.A.
Prospect Venture Partners
Jim Tananbaum is managing director and co-founder of Prospect Venture
Partners II and III, a dedicated life science fund with over $1 billion
in capital under management.
Jim has over a decade’s experience in the biotech and pharmaceutical
sector. During his time with Prospect, he has helped found
and lead financing for many biotechnology, pharmaceutical and healthcare
service companies, including Cogentus, Infinity Pharmaceuticals,
Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Novavax, Pathworks, RoxRo Pharma, Vanda Pharmaceuticals
and Vitae Pharmaceuticals. Previously, as a partner at Sierra
Ventures, he led investments in Amerigroup, Healtheon, Intensiva
HealthCare Corporation and NovaMed EyeCare Management. From 1991
to 1993, Jim was a senior product manager at Merck & Company,
where he was part of the team responsible for repositioning Prilosec®.
Jim was also the founder of two successful biotechnology companies:
GelTex, which he founded in 1991 and which was bought for $1.6b by
Genzyme, and Theravance, founded in 1997 where as CEO for its first
three years, he developed the company to over 200 employees.
Jim is a member of the Young Presidents' Organization and Chapter
Chair Golden Gate Chapter and a member of the Harvard/MIT Health
Sciences and Technology Visiting Committee. He received his undergraduate
degree and B.S.E.E. from Yale University, and his M.D. and M.B.A.
from Harvard.
